UV U SEE

Announcing UV-U-SEE, a new Pablo initiative that’s been two years in the making, involving incredible partners and unbelievable commitment.

To mark the start of #MelanomaAwarenessMonth we’ve joined forces on UV-U-SEE, our own initiative that looks to change how the construction industry sees skin protection. Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer and construction workers in the UK, who make up 8% of the nation's workforce, account for 44% of occupational melanoma skin cancer deaths.

This deeply personal project started with one of our Joint MDs, Hannah Penn. Read here, in Hannah’s own words about her melanoma diagnoses shortly after the birth of her second child. After making a full recovery, Hannah put the full force of the agency behind melanoma in the construction industry after she found the shocking statistic.

Research conducted with our partners Considerate Constructors and The National Federation of Builders found that construction workers didn’t realise that melanoma was a workplace danger and that workplaces didn’t protect against it either. So we created The UV-U-SEE holistic skin protection system, designed to inform, alert and nudge those busy working on-site into a new behaviour of protection and vigilance. We’ve pioneered ‘The Higher Vis Vest’, a standard safety vest with an integrated UV-U-SEE silicon logo filled with a long-lasting UV sensitive material, a UV-U-SEE sun cream from LifeJacket Skin Protection, and crucially, we’ve helped implement a policy change.

Which is why Considerate Constructors Scheme, the industry benchmark for on-site health and safety, is committing to updating their Code of Considerate Practice to include the provision and education for skin protection. This will be a game-changing piece of policy, acknowledging that skin protection is currently a dangerous oversight, from an industry that prides itself on health and safety.
